Living in Africa – South Africa to be precise – offers incredibly unique experiences that I have not seen anywhere else in the world. That’s because on this continent, there is a richness in culture and heritage that seeps into food, fashion, lifestyle and even music – all of which is characteristically African. In other words, Africanism (or Pan-Africanism) is showcased in various fields.
Today, I will share the story of my musical encounter with an African Diva. Yes, indeed I had the privilege to be invited to attend the album launch of the beautiful African Diva, Bussine. This event took place two weeks ago at Marimba Restaurant in Cape Town.
Allow me to share her remarkable story… Born and bred in Gabon, Central West Africa, brought up by a Pastor dad and a Gospel singer mom, Bussine was exposed to music from a very young age. Absolutely passionate about music, she quickly followed her mother’s singing footsteps by taking the lead in many church choirs as well as appearing in her mom’s music videos.
Needless to say that this gradually led her to become a gifted vocalist and songwriter. Bussine moved to South Africa in 2010 to enjoy the rich cultural diversity of the land of her personal icon and hero – Nelson Mandela. In South Africa, she continued to pursue her professional career as a singer, participating in many singing contests, including The Wow Factor (hosted by musical theatre producer, Richard Loring). As is often the case, everything happens for a reason. It was at that very event – where it was announced that the winner would get a ‘Recording Contract’ – that Bussine walked away as a Winner and met one of the final judges, producer and composer Gabi Le Roux. In Jan 2014, Bussine signed her recording contract with Gabi Le Roux as her producer. The latter’s musical prodigy also include Mandoza and he is the co-owner and Creative Director at Kaleido Media.
The debut album MusiQ was born through Bussine’s hard work and dedication under the equally hard work and expert guidance of Gabi Le Roux. Each track has its own character and story to tell, through the lyrics which are splendidly profound, using both English and French words. As you listen your way through these 12 tracks, you’ll agree that Bussine truly has a gift – this magnificent African Diva can sing ballads that melt your heart, pop songs that make you want to dance, sultry R&B that seeps deep inside your soul. Throughout this wonderful journey, one can see that her relationship with music has always been a precious love affair and she even dedicates a song to it, a track aptly entitled “Music” describing music as her best friend.
She and her husband, Ben (also her manager at BestSellected Artist) live in Cape Town, where I had the pleasure to meet them.
Watching Bussine perform live for the launch of her debut album MusiQ was fabulous to say the least. Not only does she embrace her Africanism in the way she dresses, from the beautiful African prints and unique outfits to her elaborate, yet elegant, braids, Bussine also remains humble in her success as a professional singer and artist.
Without pretense, she is a true artist determined to make her life count for a higher purpose – one can immediately feel it in her profoundly inspiring and uplifting lyrics as well as her unwavering faith in God.
I invite you to take a few minutes to watch her music clip:
I saw her perform it live, however watching the video clip a few days after the live performance gave me another chance to better appreciate the lyrics – especially as there’s a section in French -it is so sexy and beautiful, you absolutely must hear it for yourself! If you did not know this, in Gabon, they speak French…
Bussine is definitely a star on the rise and destined to even greater things I am sure!
